Rochester, N.Y. — A chaotic and deadly confrontation unfolded Friday night as three Rochester Police Department officers were shot while responding to what was initially reported as a domestic violence incident, authorities confirmed. The suspect, who engaged officers with gunfire, was later located and pronounced dead at the scene, leaving investigators to piece together the sequence of events. 

RPD Chief David Smith said responding officers encountered “multiple shots fired” shortly after arriving at a residence near Chili Avenue and Thurston Road. The suspect fled the immediate scene but was tracked down by additional responding units, leading to a second brief exchange of gunfire. The suspect was struck and died at the location, according to official briefings.

Officers Hospitalized; Conditions Unclear

All three officers wounded in the incident were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the severity of their injuries, though sources confirm they remain in medical care as the department continues its investigation. 

Mayor Malik Evans addressed the incident, describing it as a “biggest nightmare” scenario for public safety during the busy holiday season and urging community members to keep the officers in their thoughts. 


Investigation Underway

The Rochester Police Department, assisted by Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and the New York State Police, has cordoned off the area where the events unfolded and is canvassing for evidence and witness statements. No additional suspects are believed to be at large, and authorities maintain there is no ongoing threat to the public. 

Officials have not yet released the identities of the officers or the deceased suspect, pending notifications of family members. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
